A Brick and Stone Mason is also known as a Bricklayer. A Bricklayer specializes in preparing and laying brick, concrete blocks, stone, structural tiles, and other masonry units. They are also trained to repair walls, partitions, patios, arches, paved surfaces, fireplaces, and chimneys.

 

During the apprenticeship, trainees will gain experience laying and cutting brick, stone and concrete blocks in various construction settings. They will also learn about masonry systems and how to construct and repair various structures including walls, arches, and fireplaces. Trainees will be taught to use several hand and power tools that bricklayers use daily, and enhance their trowel and hammer skills. Being a bricklayer involves working in high speed environments where problem solving, creativity and proactive thinking is essential. People interested in this trade must be comfortable working in the elements and at heights.

 

Key attributes for people interested in this trade are mental dexterity, mechanical aptitude, the ability to problem-solve and think sequentially, as well as, possessing the ability to work at heights. Bricklaying is physically demanding work and requires considerable effort in lifting heavy materials, climbing, bending, kneeling, and working on scaffolding.

 

This Apprenticeship has three (3) in-class levels which are eight (8) weeks in length and is a Red Seal Trade. Apprentices will be required to complete their Level 2 training.

 

Upon successful completion, apprentices will be placed with an employer for the duration of their apprenticeship.
