For the LiUNA Local 183 Training Centre, the safety of our members on the job site is of the utmost importance. We offer multiple health and safety programs to try and fulfill our goal which is to do our part to ensure that members return home safe to their families each day. From provincially mandated programs to sector specific, our health and safety training catalogue covers a multitude of programs necessary and beneficial to workers on the job.
*Please note that Members of LiUNA Local 183 receive priority for all programs.
**There is no reimbursement for health and safety programs. If you take a program as a non-member you will not be refunded the fee if and when you become a member.

Program Requirements
- Being at least 18 years old
- Have a valid Ontario driver licence (G or G2)
- Having a work experience in the construction sector is an asset
- Members receive priority for all training

0-8 Ton Boom Truck Mobile Crane Operator (3 Days)
*Minimum 1,400 hours of experience required and must provide an employer letter of experience. Upon completion of this program, participants will be exposed to the knowledge and skills required of a mobile crane operator. Participants will engage in both in class and hands on training which will focus on transporting and positioning the vehicle on site, performing required inspections, executing load lifts, and safely depositing building materials to the work area. Must have a valid DZ license. No Expiry.
0-8 Ton Boom Truck Mobile Crane Operator (5 Days – No Experience Required)
Upon completion of this program, participants will be exposed to the knowledge and skills required of a mobile crane operator. Participants will engage in both in class and hands on training which will focus on transporting and positioning the vehicle on site, performing required inspections, executing load lifts, and safely depositing building materials to the work area. Asbestos Type 1 & 2 in Construction – IHSA
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to identify possible asbestos locations and types, understand the safety hazards associated with working around asbestos and carry out appropriate operations to maximize safety. This program is intended for all workers on projects where asbestos may be present. No Expiry.
Asbestos Type 3 Abatement Worker (3 Days) – IHSA
Upon successful completion of this program, participants will be knowledgeable in Type 3 asbestos work as defined in Regulation 278/05. This program will also prepare participants to write the 253W Asbestos Abatement Worker exam administered by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD). Type 3 Asbestos Abatement Worker certification will be provided by the MLTSD upon successful completion of the 253W exam. No Expiry. *Currently only offered at our Cobourg or Kingston location.
Basics of Supervising (2 Days) – IHSA
Upon completion of this program, participants will learn how to fulfill their role as a supervisor and understand the responsibilities under Ontario Law to manage health and safety in the workplace. Note: After completing training, the employer is responsible for validating a supervisor’s health and safety competency. No Expiry.
Chainsaw Safety Operations & Maintenance – LIUNA
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to identify parts of a chainsaw, potential hazards they can encounter, and safe and proficient chainsaw operating practices. This program is for workers who use power chainsaws for general ground use. No Expiry.
Confined Space Hazard Awareness – IHSA
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to recognize confined spaces in construction, describe major hazards of confined spaces and identify controls required for confined space entry. No Expiry.
Electrical Safety Awareness – WHSC
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to recognize potential sources of harmful electrical exposure, understand the health effects of unsafe practices and identify proper controls to ensure safety. This program is mainly for workers that perform electrical work from 0-750 Volts. No Expiry.
Fire Extinguisher Safety Training – LIUNA
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to identify types of fire classes and extinguishers, describe safe operating practices and understand emergency procedures. No Expiry.
First Aid Emergency CPR Level A and AED (1 Day) – (L-AE OR L-C)
Upon completion of this program, participants will understand basic information on first aid and CPR. They will know the actions to take when dealing with emergency situations involving adults, and they will also receive training on proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This program is Level A which has a focus on dealing with managing adult casualties. Valid for 3 years.
First Aid Standard CPR Level A and AED (2 Days)
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to understand detailed information on first aid and CPR. They will know the actions to take when dealing with emergency situations involving adults, and they will also receive training on proper use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This program is Level A which has a focus on dealing with managing adult casualties. Valid for 3 years.
Hoisting & Rigging Basic Safety Training (2 Days)
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to identify hoisting and rigging equipment, and carry out safe hoisting and rigging during inspection, maintenance, and operation. No Expiry.
JHSC – Level 1: Occupational Health and Safety (4 Days) – WHSC
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to identify and fight off behavioural-based management approaches and establish real prevention programs that identify, assess and control hazards. No Expiry.
JHSC – Level 2: Provincial Law (4 Days) – WHSC
Upon completion of this program, participants will understand health and safety law, how to use their legislative rights and how to develop strategies to make workplace improvements. No Expiry.
JHSC – Level 3: Certification Part 1 – WHSC
*Letter of Referral from Union Coordinator required Upon completion of this program, participants will understand the Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, the Internal Responsibility System, and the purpose and requirements of workplace health and safety policies and programs. This program is intended for health and safety representatives.
JHSC – Level 4: Certification Part 2 (Sector Specific – 2 Days) – WHSC
*Letter of Referral from Union Coordinator required Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to identify, assess and control hazards specific to their worksite. This program must be completed by joint health and safety committee members to become fully certified. Full certifications are valid for 3 years and a refresher is available for certifications that are nearing expiry.
Mini-Excavator Operator Awareness (2 Days)- LIUNA
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to identify the key components and features of a Mini-Excavator, recognize safety hazards on the job and identify regulations related to Mini-Excavator operation. Participants will also be able to identify safe operating practices, and demonstrate proper use of controls to perform various functions. No Expiry but recommended every 3 years.
Natural Gas (CH-02) Construction Heater Operator – LIUNA
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to identify and describe natural gas legislation, equipment, and hazards, as well as identify safe procedures and practices when working with natural gas. Valid for 3 years.
Occupational Health and Safety Awareness for Supervisors in 5 Steps
Upon completion of the program, participants will understand what the Occupational Health and Safety Act expects from supervisors. It will provide participants the knowledge on how supervisors can ensure the safety of their workers every day. This program can be completed on the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development website. No Expiry.
Occupational Health and Safety Awareness for Workers in 4 Steps – Online
Upon completion of the program, participants will understand their rights and responsibilities on the job, as well as what is expected from employers, supervisors, and workers according to Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act. This program can be completed on the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development website. No Expiry.
Power Elevated Work Platform – LIUNA
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to identify different types of lifts, the hazards involved and the legal obligations when operating a lift. This program is intended for novice or experienced elevated work platform operators. Prerequisite: Working at Heights Training Program. No Expiry but recommended every 3 years.
Propane (CH-02) Construction Heater Operator – LIUNA
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to identify the properties and hazards of propane, understand how to handle and store propane and describe safe operations when using propane. Valid for 3 years.
Rough Terrain Forklift (2 Days)
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to understand the principles and operations of a rough terrain forklift, the hazards associated with operating the machine and the procedures that will ensure a safe work environment. This program is intended for all workers whose duties require them to operate rough terrain forklifts on site. No Expiry but recommended every 3 years.
Scaffold Hazard Awareness – IHSA
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to understand legislation related to scaffold work, recognize types of scaffolds and the possible risks involved and understand how to control hazards. No Expiry.
Skid Steer Operator Training (2 Days)
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to understand the principles of operating a skid steer, workers’ duties and responsibilities and the procedures used to maximize safety on site. This program is intended for novice and experienced skid steer operators. No Expiry but recommended every 3 years.
Traffic Control Person – LIUNA
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to demonstrate knowledge of vehicle traffic hazards, establish effective procedures, and identify control options. No Expiry.
Trenching Safety Hazard Awareness
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to demonstrate hazard recognition and recommend safe practices and procedures for trenching operations. This program is recommended for workers who are involved in excavations deeper than 1.2 m (4 ft.). No Expiry.
Welding Certification Test – CWB
Upon successful completion of the test, participants will be able to obtain their full welding certification. This certification test follows CSA Standard W47.1 and involves 4 plate/class tests (Flat, Horizontal, Vertical Up and Overhead) which will be evaluated by a Canadian Welding Bureau inspector. Test plates are then taken to a lab for further evaluation to determine a passing grade. Valid for 2 years. *Members Only
Working at Heights Full – LIUNA
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to recognize fall hazards and apply appropriate controls to maximize safety. Participants will also explore key components of a fall rescue plan and emergency procedures. Note: After in-class training, the employer must train workers on the specific hazards and types of equipment they will face on the job. Valid for 3 years.
Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS 2015)
Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to identify WHMIS responsibilities, interpret information found on labels, recognize WHMIS pictograms, recognize, and locate safety data sheets and understand general safe work practices that should be followed when working with hazardous products. Valid for 1 year.
